Computational Power: Automated Use of WhatsApp in Brazilian Elections

The 2018 presidential election in Brazil raised concerns in Brazilian media, academia, and society about the strategic use of political campaigning on social networks, mainly WhatsApp. Humphrey fellow Marco Konopacki conducted a study to investigate primary factors that demonstrate the degree of coordination among WhatsApp groups and identified patterns of behavior of its users. The results indicate that there is strong evidence of automation in multiple WhatsApp groups and a high degree of interconnection.
